Burning it up in Borneo

We are back in the New Zealand winter after a week in Sarawak at the Rainforest World Music Festival - a wonderful, very special event that bought together a wide range of performers from countries as diverse as Morocco, USA, France, Tanzania, Finland, Korea, Malaysia, Sarawak and Hungary to name a few. I rate it the best world music festival we have performed at - I think that has a lot to do with the hosts and the people of Sarawak. Anyway, I would highly recommend it.

Prior to that, we headed up to the Netherlands for the Tong Tong Festival, which was a celebration of all things Indonesia - and then we flew to Venice, to launch the Venice Art Biennale - more specifically, the two wonderful artists representing N.Z. What a magical place with its winding lanes, canals, peeling buildings with beautiful balconies - every corner was like a slice of art history. We were like japanese tourists. The food was incredible, but bloody expensive.

After our performance in Venice that morning, we flew to Cairns where we jumped on the stage that night for a gig. I was so totally stuffed that I forgot some of the lyrics to my songs, but only Amiria and Trina seemed to notice! The following morning, we flew to Brisbane where we played in the Festival of Dreaming, run by the glorious Rhoda Roberts. It was full of stunning artists from Australia, Canada and a bunch of us from Aotearoa. It was full of natives we knew from Toronto - a great catch up.

NZ Venice Biennale venue

New Zealand artists exhibiting at the 53rd Venice Biennale, have secured a new venue at La Maddalena church. Located on the Strada Nova, one of Venice’s main shopping throughfares, it is parallel to the Grand Canal between the railway station and the Rialto. La Maddalena is a rare example of 18th century architecture in Venice with the symbol of the Knights Templar above the main door of the church.

Established in 1895, the Venice Biennale is the world's oldest international forum for contemporary visual art, and attracts thousands of the world's most influential artists, curators, critics, gallery directors and collectors.

Maori musician and activist Moana Maniapoto, of Moana and the Tribe, tells Rob Mellett about what makes her tick

TACKLING the big themes – war, love and freedom – are the sources from which Moana Maniapoto’s finds her inspiration, providing a vivid backdrop to her vibrant
cultural consciousness.

The Maori vocalist and lyricist of Moana and the Tribe is speaking to timeOUT on her return from a protest down Auckland’s Queen St, demonstrating against what Maori perceive as their marginalisation by the New Zealand government. "It was an excellent day. Seven thousand people marching in wet and ugly weather. It shows what can be done," she says.

"Maori have always been vocal. But we are connecting with each other more now, to challenge the authorities which aren’t representing us." Moana (pronounced Mo-anna) has taken action wherever she perceives injustice, from the World Trade Organisation protests in Hong Kong, to the International March for Peace and Non-Violence recently held in New Zealand.

Consistently expanding the horizons of Maori music with her recordings and stunning performances, Moana and the Tribe are seen as the catalyst behind the recent international exposure of acts such as Te Vaka, Fat Freddy’s Drop and Wai.

Her musical journey as a professional seeking to forge a career from music began with first band Moana and the Moahunters, which played the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival and the Vancouver Folk Festival. Their remake of the classic Black Pearl scored them a gold single in NZ.

That group reshaped into the Tribe in 2002, fusing traditional Maori styles such as taonga puoro and haka and combining them with reggae, soul and RnB. The Tribe are now sought-after around the world.

They have been profiled on German and Italian TV, launched the NZ film Whale Rider in Germany and supported superstar Youssou N’Dour. Racking up more than 200 gigs internationally, the band have played to Kanak tribal villages in New Calendonia, as well as doing sell-out gigs in Russia.

Moana says: "We got invited to a private party in Russia, overlooking the Kremlin. It was just so surreal. Then we were asked to play the Musical Academy in Vladivostok. "It was an eye-opener to meet such lovely, lovely people. That’s what touring teaches you; that we are all the same."But Moana says singing for a visiting Nelson Mandela in Auckland was one of the highlights of her life.

Now, with the release of the fourth album, Wha, Moana says she is excited to be tapping into new depths."There are lots of different themes on Wha. We pay tribute to Maori soldiers who fought and died in Italy. The CD also features two archival pieces, made in the Western Desert by B Company of the 28th Maori Battalion.

"There were lots of special moments while recording it with Mahuia Bridgman-Cooper. What I like about Wha is that every song can be performed live."Moana was inspired several years ago to hark back to her Maori roots after visiting the US and watching an Afro-American gospel band.

"That’s when I decided there would be no more trying to sound like Beyonce. I love soul and reggae and saw Bob Marley when he played New Zealand in 1979. But I had to go back to the roots of my traditional music," she says.And by incorporating traditional Maori instruments like the roria – a finely whittled piece of bone – and the putatara – a conch shell with carved mouthpiece – Moana and the Tribe bring a spiritual element into their live shows.

Moana adds: "We are really looking forward to our Tanks show. It is our first time to Far North Queensland and we promise an unforgettable performance."

Having seen their showcase at the inaugural Australasian World Music Expo in Melbourne late last year, one can specially commend the Kiwi act Moana & The Tribe, who play the Tanks on Friday June 5th en-route to The Dreaming festival at Woodford. Moana Maniapoto and her troupe deftly fuse Maori taonga puoro (traditional instrumentation), haka and chants with RnB, soul, reggae and even classical elements. Visually striking, they will find the gothic atmosphere of the Tanks perfect.

Moana & The Tribe is not the only top-drawer Kiwi act playing the Tanks in June. Salmonella Dub is locked in for a concert on Saturday the 27th . They are Aotearoa's, and indeed the southern hemisphere’s, leading exponents of dub, the reggae dance music pioneered in Jamaica by production whizzes like Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry and King Tubby. They have also delved into Maori culture Sal Dub’s most recent album, Feel The Seasons Change, marries a selection of songs from their back catalogue with ambient soundscapes, ancient Maori instruments and the majesty of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.

In the landscape of New Zealand music, one genre stands out as a solid cornerstone – music by Maori artists.
Powerfully diverse, traditional music sun in Maori tongue has found a niche on mainstream radio and launched a depth of appeal to the commercial realm that was unexpected.
This popularity has enabled Indigenous singers to demonstrate their poetry and emotional relevance in an art form that now transgresses cultures.
One of the most distinctive, articulate and significant voices to emerge from this genre is Moana Maniapoto, whose politically conscious music has seen her perform at festivals around the globe.
Combining influences with her traditional instruments such as rock, soul, hip-hop and reggae, Moana has created her own stand-out style.
She’s been described as a “truly inspiring performing and recording artist” (The Beat, US, 2006) and has been credited as “laying the foundations for the recent international exposure of New Zealand acts” (Songlines, 2006).
Last year this multi-award winning artist and her band, The Tribe, made their debut Australian performance as part of the Australasian World Music Expo and so enamoured were audiences with her music that less than a year later this enigmatic performer is returning to Oz again.

JUICE spoke to one of the many acts that will be gracing the stage of 3-day Rainforest World Music Festival this July. Moana of Moana and the Tribe dished to us about Maori music, New Zealand and her thoughts on pop music.

How has your week been?
Very cold – but family focused as my baby and I are visiting my parents who live in Rotorua, 3 hours out of Auckland.

Nice. So you’re residing in New Zealand now? How are things there?
The news of the last few days have been dominated by an armed siege that has left 1 policeman dead and 2 others seriously injured. That is quite traumatic in a country of our size. We face many challenges here – rising drug culture, violence, poverty, racism – but there are some inspiring people and stories that make NZ a very special country still.

What is Maori music for those who don’t know?
It means different things to different people, but to me, it is music produced by Maori that has a distinct Maori identity to it. For example, it might convey Maori stories, or utilise our beautiful language or incorporate traditional instruments or our indigenous vocal styles. Mine covers all of the above!

Tell us, how did your passion for Maori music start?
It began as a child growing up in a house where my father always had a guitar and ukelele handy, where he was a member of many traditional performance groups and I witnessed him and his 4 brothers sing as part of our tribal rituals. My sister Trina who sings with me was bought up the same way, too. I was schooled at a Catholic boarding school for Maori girls, which is where I learned the art of vocal harmony.

How long have you been in music?
Informally, all my life – professionally, for half of it!

You’ve won so many awards. Which one means the most to you?
Being made an Art Laureate by the NZ Arts Foundation. It was a huge honour, given the calibre of the other Laureates. I still can’t believe it.

Which is your most memorable experience ever as an artist?
Certainly singing in well below sub-zero temperatures in an amphitheater carved out of snow near the Arctic Circle – wearing a padded snow suit, thick boots, sealskin mittens and a fur hat – has GOT to be unforgettable!

Sounds like it. What was it like performing for Nelson Mandela?
Like one of those slow-motion scenes in a romantic movie! He is the outstanding man of these times and all of those in his presence knew we were in the company of a great human.

What do you think of the current pop music chart though?
A lot of it I find very bland, repetitive and uninspiring. Equally, there are some songs big on melody and style that I only wish I could have composed. I prefer to listen to artistes who are off the charts – people who sing in French, Spanish … whose passion and pride in their unique identity is reflected in their music.

You’re 1 half of a documentary team too, how involved were you with it?
My husband is a documentarymaker and he has mentored me into directing. I’ve also produced a couple of small documentaries myself. I find documentarymaking similar to producing an album – it’s all about finding a creative way of telling a good story and pulling a talented team together to achieve a particular vision. It is also an honour to be let into someone’s life, particularly an elder, to document their lives. I love it.

Any good movies you’ve watched lately?
NZ film Rain of the Children, by Vincent Ward. Last week I also watched Defiance and The Band Visit which were both good films too.

We’ll definitely check them out. How’s a typical non-working day for Moana?
Hmmm, as a new mother – I don’t think there is any such thing. But a day of luxury for me would involve sharing a good meal with friends and family - and the ultimate – a massage!

What can we expect from your performance at the Rainforest World Music Festival 2009 in July?
Passion, soul and an insight into being Maori.

Any big plans coming up for Moana and the Tribe?
We are playing in St Marks square in Venice soon, touring Australia, but greatly looking forward to meeting with various tribes and musicians at the Rainforest Festival. It is an honour to be invited to play.

'Wha' is a beautiful work from New Zealand music icon, Moana Maniapoto. In the six years since their last album Moana & The Tribe have been capturing the hearts & minds of international audiences and critics with their breathtaking live performances.

Moana paid her way through law school by singing covers in the highly competitive Auckland club circuit. In 1990, Moana & the Moahunters released the feminist anthem "Black Pearl" which shot to No. 2 on the national charts, earning Moana her first gold. Since then, she has released albums 'Tahi', & 'Rua'. 2002 heralded time for a change where by Moana & The Tribe was formed and have since released 'Toru' (which reached No.17 on the European World Music Charts), the DVD 'Live & Proud' and now in 2008, the latest full length album, 'Wha'.

Moana is a recipient of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to music & Maori, a Life Time Recipient of the Toi Iho Maori Made Mark and received the 2005 Te Tohu Mahi Hou a Te Waka Toi Award from Te Waka Toi (Creative N.Z), in recognition of outstanding leadership and contribution to the development of new directions in Maori art and in 2007 was bestowed the honour of being made a New Zealand Art Laureate.

Formed in 2002, Moana & The Tribe have played nearly 150 international concerts, most recently from Kanak villages in the islands of New Caledonia to sell-out concerts in Vladivostok, Russia. Some of their live highlights include playing on the ancient field of Olympia (Greece), on the spiritual idyll that is Rekohu (Chatham Islands); Tollwood Festival (Germany); Etnosur Festival (Spain) and at the Gnesins Music Academy (Moscow).

The exquisite 'Wha' is an extensive collage of contemporary dub, reverential odes to heroes lost, emotive reminders about our past, and sensual love songs. The sounds range from electronic programming through to flugel horn to Taonga Puoro (traditional Maori instruments) and include historical recordings such as that of the 28th Maori Battalion.

It is their first entirely Maori language album and their first foray into collaborations with the classical world including composer Victoria Kelly (Strawpeople, Anika Moa, + Greg Johnson) and members of the New Zealand Trio (one of this country's most acclaimed professional chamber groups).

WHA contains 10 new songs celebrating love, protesting against free trade, acknowledging the independence struggle of Timor and paying tribute to Maori soldiers buried in foreign lands. Produced by Mahuia Bridgman-Cooper and Moana Maniapoto, the album was recorded at Beaver Studios. Band members Cadzow Cossar, Horomona Horo, Max Stowers, Ashley Browne and Richard Nunns were joined by vocalists Amiria Reriti and Trina Maniapoto. Scott Morrison co-wrote most of the songs with Moana, all of which are in Maori. Tahi is the Gold selling debut by Moana And The Moahunters. It reflects the unique sound of Aotearoa, fusing dance music with Maori elements.

This is the re-issue of a "classic" New Zealand album "TAHI" (meaning "One"). "TAHI" was originally released in 1993 and was one of the Top 5 selling albums in that year, achieving gold status. "TAHI" contains 14 tracks, featuring Moana's signature hit and Gold selling single "Black Pearl" (reached No.2 in Top 50 Charts). A total of five singles were released from "TAHI" - including the innovative chart hit "A.E.I.O.U." (re-mixed dance version appeared on Moana's follow-up album "RUA") and "Tahi" (which featured a stunning video by Award-Winning filmmaker, Kerry Brown).

"TAHI" also featured guest vocalists Rev Rasul Muhammad from the Nation of Islam in Detroit, Andrew Fagan of the Mockers (remember them!) and guest video appearances by the Neville Brothers. The fabulous backing singers "The Moahunters" were Mina Ripia (of recent WAI fame) and Teremoana Rapley (solo singer and fronting TV's "Mai Time" Show).

In the Māori language Matariki is the name of the Pleiades star cluster, which was important for agriculture in establishing the correct time to plant crops. There are two explanations of the name Matariki: firstly, mata-riki (small eyes) or mata-ariki (chiefly eyes). The constellation is also believed to have been used by navigators.

The first rising of the Pleiades and of Rigel (Puanga in Māori) occurs just prior to sunrise in late May or early June, and this indicates that the old year has ended and the new year has begun. The actual time for celebrating Matariki varies, depending on the iwi (tribe or clan). Some iwi celebrate it immediately. Others wait until the rising of the next full moon, or alternatively the dawn of the next new moon. It has become common practice for various private and public institutions to celebrate Matariki over the period of a week or month anywhere from early June to late July. Other iwi used the rising of Rigel in a similar way.

In traditional times, Matariki was a season to celebrate and to prepare the ground for the coming year. Offerings of the produce of the land were made to the gods, including Rongo, god of potato. This time of the year was also a good time to instruct young people in the lore of the land and the forest. In addition, certain birds and fish were especially easy to harvest at this time.

Moana & the tribe will number 12 onstage for our gigs at this years WOMAD, in New Plymouth. Our first concert is at 2pm at the Bowl of Brooklyn on Saturday, whereas our second one is on the Gables stage at 9.30pm on the Sunday night.

We rehearsed yesterday and I have to say - I am liking the sound of our big band! Horo is placing taonga puoro next to Ash and Mahuias classical instruments, Cadz has pulled out his electric guitar alongside the acoustic and we have three warriors taking to the stage.

We will be performing songs from WHA with a couple from RUA and I thought I would pull one from TAHI that I haven't played for at least a decade! A blast from the past.

For those of you who can't get to WOMAD, we are also playing in the Manawatu Festival of Arts the following weekend, on March 27th.

Moana Maniapoto Interview

BRANNAVAN GNANALINGAM talks to Moana Maniapoto – formerly of the Moahunters, now together with the Tribe – about the challenges of representing ‘Maori music’.

MOANA MANIAPOTO has been saddled with being one of the key figures of both Maori music in New Zealand, and New Zealand music in the World Music “genre”. Part of this is due to her public visibility – musician (the high-profile Moana and the Moahunters, and now Moana and the Tribe) TV presenter, documentary-maker, radio host and, back in the day, one-time Law School graduate. She’s released her fourth album with the Tribe, WHA (following Tahi, Rua and Toru aptly), and is as eclectic as ever – everything from Alistair Galbraith to pre-European waiatas are employed. It’s also her first entirely full Maori-language album, and the album is a stirring mix of introverted and expansive sounds, an album rooted to the land, but also looking much further than our shores.

She chose singing solely in Maori “just for a bit of a change, I’ve always had a bilingual kind of approach. I’d put some songs out there in Maori and just kind of felt right. Some of the songs originated in Maori and a couple were translated from English, and it felt cohesive.” The songs flowed well in Maori too. “It’s a really beautiful language, a melodious language even when it’s not sung. It’s round with lots of vowel sounds, there aren’t any words which don’t end in a vowel, so it’s very pleasing to the ear.”

Maniapoto had an unconventional entrance into music, playing at clubs to fund her way through university. But she admits “my family always had a guitar and a ukulele.” She’s managed to continue making music for nearly two decades, because “I’m very passionate about it. People come and see us perform and buy our CDs. I guess I’ll keep doing it until that stops. There are always new countries to visit and to take our music to.” Part of this has included playing at the United Nations and playing in some big music festivals around the world.

However, she is forced to be the representative of ‘Maori music’, and this seems to be an exotic term even in New Zealand. It’s almost as if that broad essentialist label is “world music” in New Zealand, and artists who delve into Maori issues are forced to carry the burden of being representative of all Maori. There’s also a struggle for visibility in this country. “Well I think we struggled for some kind of visibility when we first started to record. We just forever seemed to be advocating, or protesting, to make the New Zealand music industry notice there was something out there that was rooted in this land. People kept on going on about this ‘New Zealand sound’ and ignoring Maori music. Now it’s gone to a space where everything’s chucked into the ‘Maori music’ category. You can have an artist like Whirimako Black who’s got a very strong jazz and blues feel to her, and other musicians who are jazz or reggae or classically based, and we’re all chucked into this Maori thing. I think it’s a double-edged sword being labelled, it’s just as silly saying New Zealand music or Pakeha music.” Anything that’s vaguely Maori often seems to get ignored during New Zealand Music Month too. “It does, New Zealand Music Month doesn’t mean diddly squat to me. It’s just another month. I’m a full time musician, so every month is New Zealand Music Month to me. I think some New Zealand music is crap, and some Maori music is not too great either, all music has its good bits and bad bits.”

Her album starts with a particular waiata, which had meant a lot to her. “That particular waiata is sung regularly on my marae, it’s a popular well-known pre-European waiata. I wanted to introduce the album making that reference back to traditional style Maori singing, and end the album with a classical arrangement or treatment of that waiata. I thought that’d be a nice sort of bookend.”

There’s also the occasional dub influence in the album too, reflecting in part her travels, and her early musical background. “I see heaps of it when I’m overseas, it’s all very chirpy and happy, I quite like it. One of the first bands I was in was a reggae band, there’s a lot of dub groups in France and Germany, and big bands with twelve people on stage. Myself and the producer Mahuia [Bridgman-Cooper], we just kind of like the freshness of it I suppose.”

The lyrics take a wider Pacific focus, placing New Zealand within a larger sphere, for example paying tribute to the peace covenants of the Moriori, and casting a critical eye towards the awful colonial legacy in East Timor. “We have travelled a lot, and there are lots of our experiences that are reflected. There’s a lot of commonality between Maori and lots of groups around the world. People have more in common than difference. Though you can celebrate those differences too. Watching East Timor go through its turmoil, I was very touched with what happened over there. My friends who were Moriori, listening to stories of them being told their people are extinct, where as children at school they were being told that their people don’t exist. I’ve listened to people in their forties and fifties very traumatised about trying to defend their right to exist.”

Her album also includes a tribute to the great leader (and her uncle) Syd Jackson. Jackson’s contribution to New Zealand society was considerably downplayed at his death. His mainstream media obituaries over-played the “activist” label, and ignored his social significance. “He’s someone I’d consider a mentor and a leader, and a very clear and strong thinker, someone with a lot of compassion and a huge intellect. He had a very clear vision for how he wanted New Zealand to be, I think he’s just hugely influential not just for Maori but non-Maori in New Zealand because his leadership led to a lot of changes. He pushed for legal aid in the courts when there was none, he led the sporting boycott of South Africa when there was none, he pushed for equal pay for women.”

She also ended up working with the great Alistair Galbraith, a fellow Art Laurete on WHA. Galbraith played the glass harmonium on the album. “He’s just lovely. I met him because he’s an Art Laureate. I didn’t know of him or his work, we shared a stage as part of the Laureate onstage panel. I was just fascinated by the stories he told – the glass harmonium, he’s really, really well versed and knowledgeable about these particular instruments that originated from Europe, I could have listened to him all night. We had a bit of a jam session on stage, so it started off a little bit hairy and it ended up pretty choice.”

Being part of the World Music scene (meaning she can share a stage with everyone from Bob Geldof to ‘pygmies’) also helps promote certain cultural aspects to a global audience. This is especially given that globalisation and cultural appropriation have placed non-white cultures under the threat of exploitation. “There’s a third wave of colonisation which is knowledge based, image and design based, where companies want to create a point of difference in the market, so they look for things that are exotic. We’ve seen hakas and mokos used by big companies around the world – I’m very proud of Maori elders and young Maori who have challenged those companies and said ‘this is not on’, because they’re so used to getting away with it. I think what I can do is represent a contemporary, traditional mix of music that’s strong and has a very strong identity and that’s totally sourced from this country. It’s not bastardised or over-romanticised or exoticised for foreigners. We talk about New Zealand, how it is, its warts, we don’t play the over-romanticised, dusky maidens, that kind of carry on. We have to kind of watch that. People have a very romantic view of New Zealand too. In my band we’re very clear about what’s right and wrong, on about what traditional elements we include in our music, we’re strong about that and don’t compromise.”

WHA is a compelling addition to that burgeoning CV. She’s someone who doesn’t seem easily bored, given her extensive accomplishments. “I’m easily distracted I think. I like creative things and my partner [Toby Mills] is a documentary maker, so that’s very similar to music except you’re telling stories through visuals. It’s hugely intensive too – I tried to do an album and a doco at the same time, and realised very quickly that you can’t. All the things I’ve been involved in, they’re about telling stories. I don’t have time to get bored. I love what I’m doing.” [Image]

Kia ora petals!

Apologies for being offline but due to the recent arrival of my delightful wee daughter, I've been otherwise occupied. However, our little family is gradually getting back into the groove. Last week, we flew to Wellington for the NZ Art Laureate Awards where I, as a past recipient, presented the stunning artist Shane Cotton with his award. We had an awesome night catching up with some of N.Zs most incredible artists - as well as with our own friends who are Wellington-based.

Today, we just flew back from Napier where I was presented with an Industry Award at the Maori Waiata 2008 Awards. This new event was staged in the Hastings Opera House as part of the Takitimu Arts Festival - and tell you what, I haven't laughed so much for a long time! The M.C, one Wiremu Winitana, was the funniest person I have come across and had everyone in fits. As well, there were performances from some wonderful artists such as she of the divine voice - Taisha and upcoming rapper Young Sid. I was greatly honoured to join a very iconic group of people who were nominated recipients for some special awards. It is always so touching to know that someone or some others sequestered in a room somewhere had a discussion that you are worthy of such recognition.

The Takitimu Arts Festival, under the leadership of Tama Huata, continues - and in sunny Hawkes Bay, its looking like a great festival to hang out at.

Next week, of course, we head off to Melbourne where I am rapt to be playing alongside other NZ artists such as Kora, Pacific Curls and Ladi6 as part of the Australian World Music Expo. I hope to catch up with gorgeous Archie Roach and check out some of our Koori brothers and sisters. All the details are below!

I opened this blog with a couple of fotos from one of the highlight concerts of our recent tour of Europe - the fabulous and extremely glamorous Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland. What a festival! Famous for 42 years, we plyed twice to excellent crowds. Last night, despite a thunderstorm threatening to disrupt the outside stage area, the clouds parted long enough for our 75 minute set - which went down fantastically. Our audience wanted an encore - and when we didn't return to the stage (they were cheering and clapping) and when the organiser informed them we had finished, they started booing!! Awesome!

The festival was full of stunning artists - Roberta Flack was playing at the same time with the David Sandborn band and Tower of Power. Tonight, is Lenny Kravitz and tomorrow night is Chaka Khan and Herbie Hancock.

The grounds are full of bars, music, food stalls - and the most drop dead gorgeous looking people....the band was all starry eyed. It was a great couple of days and we parked up at the home of our NZ Consul General in Switzerland, who with her husband, spoilt us rotten! Off to have a meal cooked for us by a top Swiss chef then onto Brienz for a gig - and a special massage. Gee, not too shabby, eh??

We were well taken care of by our promoter Dirk, who even took Trina and I to watch the first few songs of the Santana concert - awesome!

Lovely city and very friendly people, a place I would like to return to. Last night, we played in Mainz as support to Norwegian singer Maria Mena, an outdoor gig in very warm temperatures.

Now we head to Augsburg - an old favourite on our tour.

We arrived into Frankfurt just in time for the European Cup Final - and joined a big bunch of germans in a park, on deckchairs, beer in hand to watch the television screens set up. What a disappointment but the germans conceded that the spanish were the better team. That night we performed outdoors and it was sweltering!

Frankfurt was followed by Bonn, in a really cute club theatre called the Pantheon. What a wonderful audience and a pretty city.

Wuppertal is famous for its overhead hanging railway system, but I learnt from our audience at the Rex Theatre that the name means Valley of the River, that the theatre was a famous burlesque club called the Apollo, that Wuppertal was the primary textile manufacturer for Germany - AND that the best organic bread in the country comes from this town!!!

Our lovely promoter arranged to have a couple of bags of bread dropped off to us so I will test it for everyone.#

Here are some fotos from our CD launches in N.Z. We had two - one in Taupo at the Erupt Lake Taupo Arts Festival and a 2nd at the Galatos. The first was very special - a real whanau night and the 2nd was packed with all our Auckland friends and whanau. It would have been the first time that 70 year olds would have been to that club, that's for sure - and did they think they were cool!!!?

'Wha' is one week out in N.Z - and moving out quickly. It's fantastic. Please go out and get it if you are in New Zealand. And if you are in Canada (hi guys, miss you!) or if you are in Germany, Switzerland and Poland (see you soon!)

Venturing down the Dub-electronica path, effectively updating and broadening her sound without compromise to the mana of a lifetime lived at one with exquisite and sensual musical warmth and passion. (Martyn Pepperell)

This album might lack the obviously powerful and overt statements of material like Moko or Ancestors on previous outings -- and her more reflective side is generously served in some superb songs such as Rangikane ana commissioned for the first Moriori marae on the Chathams which comes with discreet strings alongside traditional flute. But the centrepiece Te Apo is a sonic battlefield inspired by protests at the WTO in Hong Kong and brings karanga, haka, the sound of street protest and a thumping rhythm section with urgent and stabbing cello adding gravitas.

The counterpoint to that anger and energy is in material drawn from and inspired by the legacy of the Maori Battalion. And then there are the delicate love songs, the deft reggae riddums . . . These days Moana and the Tribe are more often taking their music to an international audience (big in Russia, mate) but the soul and spirit which drives and determines the course of this music is always close to home and heart.

Another diverse, informed and quite moving album (Titia is in tribute to the late activist and leader Syd Jackson) by one of our finest. (Graham Reid)

With the release of her group's fourth album, Moana Maniapoto is taking stock of where her life, her music and her politics meet. She talks to Scott Kara

Moana Maniapoto wanders round her kitchen making cups of tea, cutting cake, slicing fudge, and pouring milk into a fancy white jug that looks more like a gravy boat. All this takes a while as she chats about meeting Bob Geldof in Germany last week ("I like him, he's very self-deprecating.") and how her 17-year-old son keeps her in touch with today's music, like the White Stripes, Kanye West ("He likes his politics"), and local lad Tiki Taane (who she wants to remix a song from her new album, Wha).

She's nothing like the staunch, hard-talking Maori activist many people know her as. The musician and documentary maker, and leader of Moana and the Tribe, has never been scared to front up, be it about politics, Maori sovereignty issues, or getting te reo [the maori language] songs played on the radio.

"I haven't always been like that," she offers. "I come from a family who are shy and don't like conflict. But I've ended up with a whole bunch of people around me who can't be bothered with mucking around and are like, 'Bring it on'."

Like who?

"Well, hell, I was married to Willie for years," she says of her ex-husband, the talkback host and former politician Willie Jackson. "The Jackson clan are a very strong family. And then there's my mentors and friends in my band, like [singer] Amiria Reriti, and I've watched my sister [Katarina] over the last few years, and she has come from the space I was at of being nice and accommodating and now, I tell ya, she's turned out just like us."

But today, sitting at the dining table in her Grey Lynn apartment which has stunning views over sprawling rooftops towards the Waitemata, she's laid back, serene and at times, when talking about Wha, almost dreamy. Even so, she agrees she is a no bullshit-type person.

"I suppose you get to a certain age where you are very clear about your values and what's right and wrong and some things are immovable, and for your own piece of mind say something or do something about it rather than moaning,".

On Wha there's the militant protest song Te Apo, which uses haka and sounds recorded by the Tribe at a protest in Hong Kong during the World Trade Organisation conference in 2006; the title track is about independence and sovereignty; and other tracks pay tribute to her heroes like the late Syd Jackson ("He was described as an activist but really he was a very compassionate person with a big heart.") and members of the Maori Battalion.

These days though, for Maniapoto it's more about the music and the songs than pushing any cultural or political barrows.

"I'm not always trying to make a cultural point. Perhaps in the early days I was trying to say you can pull elements from traditional Maori music into the contemporary, and culturally and politically that fusion is going to produce something great. But now it's more about how do the musical elements all work together."

And Wha is Moana and the Tribe's most cohesive album yet. In the past the mix of musical styles on albums Tahi (released as Moana and the Moahunters in 1993 which included hit singles Black Pearl and A.E.I.O.U. (Akona te Reo)), 1998's Rua, and 2003's Toru, have often been awkward.

But Wha seamlessly brings together traditional Maori elements like haka and taonga puoro, with classical, reggae, dub, and world music.

Previously she worked with a number of producers, however this time round she used Mahuia Bridgman-Cooper who joins the Tribe for a month long European tour in July. "That's the way it works, you start out doing business together and then you end up being whanau," she smiles.

This tour also includes a performance at the Montreux Jazz Festival alongside Joan Baez, Erykah Badu, Etta James, Alicia Keys, and Paul Simon.

She also attributes the album's cohesiveness to talking through the album concept with both Bridgman-Cooper and manager Sol de Sully. "So that even though the styles are diverse, they all work well together. Which means the album sounds a lot better than other ones which might have been a bit disjointed. Looking back over the four albums my confidence as a songwriter has grown. I don't know how many songs I wrote on the first one but I've done more and more and then got to this one where they are all my songs, bar one."

And when it comes to making music she's keen to emphasis the team effort of the Tribe, which includes her partner, tour manager and multimedia producer, Toby Mills. Oh and haka experts - who she dubs the "show ponies" - Scott Morrison and Paora Sharples. "They take longer to get dressed than us girls that's for sure," she jokes.

Many of the songs on Wha are co-written with Morrison, who is also her te reo expert. "He has got really beautiful reo," she beams. "But he doesn't translate [English into Maori] literally. He does it conceptually and he uses really old phrases. Whereas I would translate it quite clumsily and literally. So if you don't understand the language you don't really understand the poetry that he uses."

Then again, on Rangikane Ana, which Maniapoto wrote for the opening of the first Moriori marae on the Chatham Islands, the emotion and compassion in the song still comes through music even if you don't understand te reo.

Despite Maniapoto's early achievements in New Zealand with Black Pearl and A.E.I.O.U., and being a recipient of the NZ Order of Merit for services to music and Maori in 2004, and an Art Laureate in 2007, at home she believes her music is still widely viewed as Maori music, or worse, a kapa haka group.

But it's overseas where she has had some of her greatest successes.

In 2004 her song Moko won America's International Songwriting Competition, beating 11,000 other entries, and The Tribe have played concerts around the world, from Vladivostock in Russia to the New Orleans Jazz Festival in the US.

The Tribe's last overseas trip was earlier this month to Bonn in Germany for a performance at the United Nations conference on biodiversity. "Which I didn't know anything about and I was thinking, 'Should we be going?'," she laughs.

As it turned out they had every right to be there because "most of our songs talk about the relationship with the land".

The German audiences' reaction to Moana and the Tribe is typical of the intrigue their music has for overseas audiences.

"Before we went to Germany we all thought they'll all be sitting there and not responsive, which is our dumb ignorant misconception. But I'll tell you what, they are full on and very emotional. It's the same in Russia. They are crying to a song like Rangikane Ana which they don't even understand the language. It's a very powerful thing, music."

Maori musicians in Russia

Vladivostok – most of us know it's in Russia. But you may be surprised to learn that it is the largest port city in Russia, and that it's on the Pacific Ocean. Yes, our Pacific Ocean.
So maybe that's why, when a group of Maori musicians visited, they were so very warmly welcomed. Moana Maniapoto and her tribe were not only the first New Zealand band to ever take on Vladivostok, they were the first New Zealanders many locals had ever met.
But they got along famously....

Apparently the headline read 'Maori send Russian Elite into Shock.' I think it was mutual. We had a delightful 3 weeks performing in Russia, even managing to lay down a hangi or two in Moscow. When we weren't singing, we seemed to be eating our way through 11 time zones. Food, food and more food.

We were particularly spoilt staying the homes of two wonderful N.Z men - Martin in Vladivostok. And, Stephen in Moscow. When we arrived into Moscow, Stephens staff cooked us up a humungous N.Z meal. It took us a while to recover from that, thanks to Anatoly and Anna.

Apart from the gorgeous tennis players, most stories reported in NZ media about Russia present one perspective. When we first went to Russia, we were shocked - it simply wasn't what we expected. Russia continues to be full of suprises - not unexpected in a country as large and dynamic as it is. It is challenging. One of our friends told us that business-wise, China is 'Russia for Beginners.' But, it is a country that we have warmed to and that certainly responds with warmth to us. We have only ever encountered friendliness, hospitality, intelligence and professionalism.

Our two major concerts in Vladivostok were sold out - one was a fundraiser for orphaned children to go on summer holiday camps at the oldest hotel in the city, complete with a grand sweeping staircase. It was very lovely - as were the glamorous ladies who came dressed to kill. Their bodyguards were waiting in the foyer. The ladies gave generously. It was a wonderful night.

The 2nd concert was in a big theatre where we were joined onstage by an accomplished violinist, celloist and ballerina. I found it hard to concentrate. This concert was filmed in a 6 camera shoot for a 2 hour television special.We don't have any fotos from this so if anyone in Vladivostok does, could you please send us a couple of snaps of Dasha onstage with us? Thank you.

Throughout our time in the East, we were trailed by a documentary crew led by the lovely Alexandra. We went out to a village, very old Soviet style, and gave a free concert in the village square. Here's a foto of Amiria with some of the local ladies.

I had a chat to a young teenage girl who was telling me she would move to the city to attend university later on. Here's a foto of kids taken from inside the moving bus. They really attached themselves to us and it was reciprocated.

We weren't allowed any cameras in 4th concert that we held in a meat processing plant (a first for us and for the workers). Maybe they had a secret recipe for sausages or something?

We did a master class in Maori music and performance arts at the University, and did another hour long TV show and radio. One of the first questions Alexander directed at Toby - 'You manage the band and your wife - which one is more difficult?' We thought that was very funny. Tobys reply was tremendously diplomatic.

Paula filmed where ever we went - and apart from the inside of the factory we performed at, no one ever questioned us.
We visited a local orphanage / foster home described as a middling one - there were worse and better around. We taught the kids an action song and haka, gave out heaps of bandanas and will have an ongoing relationship with them. They were so quick to pick up words, even though what we were teaching them was in our Maori language. They also performed for us.

Most of the kids were from dysfunctional homes and the effects of alchoholism and drug addiction were evident on some of the kids. We worked out we could have taken 7 kids each with us and cleaned the place out! Man, it was tempting. They were very onto it, alert children - Amiria had a scout around and saw the bedrooms which she described as spartan but clean and colourful.

We also went inside the best preserved military fort in the world according to our host Larissa. It went 20 meters below the ground and housed 400 soldiers at one time. It had awesome sound acoustics, too so we stopped for a bit of a song.

We saw the memorial wall nearby with nearly 30 000 names on it which made me want to bawl me eyes out. Russia has lost an incredible number of people throughout the last 100 years in particular, and you just could not forget that fact no matter where you went.

We were introduced to some of Russias masters in Shaolin fighting (historically, the region was part of China centuries ago), exchanged weapons and watched their school put on a display for us. It was a love fest between the two masters and our Paora and Scottie. Alexander and Edward - lovely men.

We also saw Baluga whales captured in a tiny pen so tourists could view them, very distressing. I couldn't stand it when the captors made the whales sing just so they could get fed. It was horrible. I would rather the whales died out in the ocean, an honourable death - rather than be forced to crash into each other as they fight for space - 7 whales to a very smal tank.

Our beautiful friend Tatyana, was voted Driver of the Year because of her abilities to avoid even the most treachorous of potholes. When her tyre burst because of one, she was (according to Toby) the fastest on tyrechanging he had ever seen - and with her stylish boots on and all!

We discovered that although Russian women are seriously some of the most glamourous int the world, they put the mean, butch looking ones on customs. And, the airport only has THREE baggage trollies - true!

We got munted on vodka, ate till the cows came home and experienced true Russian hospitality. In Vladivostok, the people are out on the edge, they are very cool. Our hosts were very hospitable, gracious and accommodating.

So, we have just written and recorded a song. The tune was written while in Vladivostok. It is called Iri Kura, with lyrics penned by Scotty. It is a gift to our hosts - Tatiana, Julia, Sasha, Natasha, Arina and Larissa. Here's a toast to our hosts, especially to the fabulous Alexander (Director of the Vladivostok Film Festival) and to our N.Z friend Martin Tate (who had 10 of us parked up in his family home.

After Vladivostok, we flew across 11 timezones to Moscow where we were reunited with old friends and performed 3 public concerts - two at the Dom and one at Club Baguette. The Dom is well known, a smallish theatre, quite underground in its feel. We rate Yulia there as the best sound engineer of the trip. We got to see lots of our mates from the NZ Embassy at one of our gigs, including Ambassador Chris Elder and his family.

And, we saw our friend jazz maestro Igor Butman, who I presented a putorino to. We played at his club the first time we went to Moscow - LeClub. And, he arranged our gig at Club Baguette (what is it with the french names??)

While in Moscow, we put down a couple of hangi for some friends. One was in our friends backyard and the second was by a river bank. For the first one, we got dressed up in pink to do all the hard work.The Russians loved our steamed underground oven food, though our friends lawn won't possibly look the same for a while. Then, we swopped our working clothes for stage ones and did a one hour concert to a crowd of 70 or so. After that, we got stuck into the pork, chicken, lamb - the works.

We were also hosted in the home of our good friend Igor, his wife Vera and mother-in-law Marina. It was normally a 45 minute drive but took 4 hours because of holiday traffic. The Zenkin whanau plied us with food and serious vodka - and about a million toasts. We sat on the deck in the sun, we sang and had a good laugh.

That's our lovely driver Alexi - Trina taught him the ukelele. Bet he doesn't get many driving jobs like ours. He took our crew to the best markets in the world...Izmailovo, where craftsmen and artists and old ladies and farmers take their handmade wares. And, the kai is awesome, too.
OFF TO ST PETERSBURG

St Petersburg was beautiful - it was white nights, no darkeness. At midnight, the sky was a rich dark blue and before it at around 10.30pm, it was white. Here's a foto of Toby at midnight on the main drag, then John outside the most beautiful building in St Petersburg at 10.30pm - I think its called the Cathedral of Spilt Blood (sounds a lot better in English).

A little like Venice, too with its canals. It's Russias crown jewel in terms of being THE city to visit. Stunning architecture, incredible history, great shopping, fab eating. We hung out with my Batley relations, and also Nepia - it was a choice few days.

I remembered paragraphs from the book The Bronze Horseman which very powerfully related the story of those locked inside the city without food and no prospect of any. St Petersburg Will always have at its heart (for me), that terrible time. Well, we have invitations to play in the lovely city next year, so thats our goal.

It's always wonderful to be home with my son - though teenage boys can be trying when they are on holiday!

I will think about how wonderful it is to travel, sing alongside and play with a bunch of very talented artists - Trina, Amiria, Max, Cadz, Jerome, Scottie, Paora and Toby. As we lay around getting spoilt rotten, glass in hand - we would look at each other knowingly and sigh, 'Just /another day at the office, eh?'

This is our friend who hosted us in Toronto, the lovely Gisele Gordon, a filmmaker whose feature documentary the Tunguska Project I am so looking forward to watching this week.

Here is my beautiful friend Gail Maurice (actor and filmmaker extradonaire) - we were hanging out at the Hairy Old Dog (or some similarly named pub in inner city Toronto!)

At COPYCAMP, we met so many lovely and intelligent people - and after our sessions, we hung out with our Canadian friends - we even had a guitar party!! Thats me, Gail and Jason doing our Bonnie Raitt number at around 4 am on the morning of the day Toby and I were to depart Canada for home.

A quick hullo from Moscow! I just spent a few days in Vladivostok and what a wonderful time I had, thanks to my great hosts Martin and Ira Tate. I stayed in their home by the seaside and woke up to the sight of wind surfers on the water. In between meetings, we went out on yachts and to Martins farm in the countryside where I was fed wild honey by a local man! It was fantastic.

Yes, our European Tour is over! Its great and sad at the same time. When I get to Russia tommorrow, I will try to catch up and post up all the remaining photos. I have some great ones but lost my USB (or is it UBS)so was unable to do that while in the UK.

HI from London. We have been in the U.K for a week and to be honest, it was hard at the start. For one thing, it is very expensive here - a pie, mashed spud and peas costed out at nearly $NZ24 - far out!!! Sounds strange, but hard to understand what people are saying, and guess what - they're all speaking English!!!!

Hartlepool was memorable because we had Te Hiras birthday there and we met a couple of nice men at our concert, one being the manager of the Studio and the other being a member of the audience.

Anyway, three memorable things from the U.K - Hebden Bridge, a beautiful, lovely looking village full of very cool people - activists, socialists, feminists, unionists - every 'ist' there is. We had a wonderful night at the Trade Centre. The place rocked. We loved it. The second thing that happened was that the lovely Ed Simpson had organised concerts in 3 picture theatres. After each performance, we screened documentaries produced by my darling Toby Mills (with me helping out!). It was a wonderful atmosphere created by Ed, a great concept.

The 3rd thing taht happened was that we met Bruce Simpson thank you (don't even know his late name) who invited us to park up Helga the bus outside his 'apartment' then invited us in to feast on a boil up. We were shown such wonderful hospitality that it has totally transformed our opinion of England. Bruce is even organising the transport of all our luggage (and believe you me, there is tons!) to Heathrow today. Yesterday, we sat in the Old Vic pub and had a few drinks for hours, it was a very pleasant way to spend the day. Last night, the wonderful roopu of Ngati Ranana welcomed, entertained and hosted us. They are all great performers, singers and I was so embarassed at singing publicly in front of them - after a great party at Bruces that ended at 5am that morning - the voice was a little worse for the wear! Anyway, check out these photos and I will post up some more during the next couple of days when I am more organised.

A great time in England - thanks to some very lovely people we met along the way...the Tribe has and continues to expand.

We arrived here yesterday and went to a concert by Gentleman & the Far East Band - never got to meet him but we were spoilt in the VIP tent. Great concert, wonderful weather, excellent music. Tonight we had a concert, an indoor one. Another lovely crowd and not a kiwi or Aussie in the room! So my news about the All Blacks beating the Aussies fell on deaf ears. A couple of our staunch fans came along, including Pia and Kurt bearing a huge selection of prime chocalate (which we started nibbling on tonight after dinner, Kurt - very nice!) A lovely little girl had a photo of her and her friend made into a greeting card for our band and wanted us to sign a poster she had drawn about us. Tonight was memorable because Jerome joined us, just arriving back from South Africa. He is just wonderful and its lovely having his presence with us on and offstage. He has even debuted as a rap artist, first time tonight and he did really well.

What a cool place! A very lovely town and a sublime venue with a ragey audience. We were well looked after and soon forgot that outside, the sun was way up high and the day was gorgeous. From the response of the audience, we could have played all night...but we only have so many songs to encore with! Our audience age ranged from young adults, a couple of children to a dear old 85 year old lady who was just in 7th heaven. We are now back in Munchen and about to head north tommrrow. Our performance at the Val de Roots Reggae Festival was cancelled. It was torrential, the grounds were muddy. We were there at the grounds for about 2 hours during which our lovely, wonderful hosts seated us in a dressing room with a fire all stoked up. They placed candles on the table and then, Stephen, the French chef presented us with a full on gourmet experience of prawns, fish, sauted potatoes, a gorgeous lemon sorbet dessert – pinot noir…well, the only thing missing was the gig! The organizers were very disappointed, as were we. Before we left, we gave an impromptu performance to thank all the cooks. It would be true to say that our short visit will leave a lasting impression on both sides. Now, we return to Munich – no point in staying in Switzerland – too wet. And, tomorrow, Horomona flies out while we drive to Landshut. To our Swiss-French hosts, a big MERCI from the band. Remember us for next year…

We had a great night in Stuttgart and were really spoilt rotten. Members of our audience delivered us bottles of wine, a huge delicious dish of tiramisu, tee shirts, creme brulee for the bus journey the following day...such generosity of spirit. And everyone knows the way to our hearts, allright - through our puku (aue!) Now we are in Switzerland where it is drizzling and we are waiting for our chalet to be cleaned up before we settle in for a quiet and romantic night ...er, all 10 of us!
